SOUND WAVES SOUTH WEST INSTRUMENT LOAN SCHEME

Instrument Loan Scheme Report for Jan to Dec 2007

The loan scheme started in September 2002. In December 2007 Sound Waves South West was providing 67 instruments on loan to young people. The loan is direct to parents who are responsible for the care and insurance of the instrument. The student should be learning the instrument with a Teacher as arranged by the parent or School.

The instruments are located as follows:

9 at Budehaven Community School -
2 Cellos, 2 Violins, 4 Clarinets, 1 Saxophone.

2 at Grenville College - 1 Clarinet, 1 Flute

1 at St. Joseph’s School - 1 Cello

11 at Bude Junior School - 1 Clarinet, 4 Flutes, 6 Violins

8 at Kilkhampton Primary School - 3 Violins, 2 Flutes, 3 Clarinets

8 at Marhamchurch Primary School - 6 Violins, 2 clarinets

12 at Morwenstow St Marks Primary School -
7 Violins, 4 cellos, 1 Trumpet

7 at Stratton Primary - 5 violins, 2 Flutes

4 at Whitstone Primary School - 4 Violins

5 at St. Petroc’s - 3 Cellos, 1 violin, 1 Trombone

Therefore there are 34 young violinists learning on our instruments. There are 10 young cellists, 9 flautists and 11 clarinettists, 1 trombone player, 1 alto saxophone player and 1 Trumpet player.

In stock and available for immediate loan are 8 Violins and 1 Viola.

We have been donated a full size Cello through the Leamington Orchestra which will need some repair.

At Christmas we were awarded a new Clarinet by the company Schreiber and Keilworth, worth £400, which will go to a student who has been learning a few years. As pupils progress we plan to upgrade the instruments where possible to help them advance.

Repairs to instruments have been carried out by Martin Cole, Jessica Rance, Tony Littlewood and Barry Moule whose skill and advice we greatly appreciate.

The Double Bass was damaged beyond viable repair while out on loan to an Orchestra but with no financial loss to this Charity.

Additional funding this year came from the Christina Aitchison Trust (£300) and Bude Carnival (£160).

This report kindly prepared by Trustee, Maggie Perryman who has operated this wonderful scheme on behalf of Sound Waves South West for many years.

As mentioned above the loan is free. The only proviso is that each child should be receiving regular tuition and that the parent takes responsibility for the instrument - insuring it against loss or damage.
